Empire Walthamstow

More details about the opening of the Empire Cinema in Walthamstow have been released.

Screenings at the nine-screen cinema will begin on November 20. The Empire group is marketing it as “second only to Leicester Square” in terms of the flagship nature of the venue.

Update: I’ve been assured that the cinema will screen 3D films. A spokesman told me: “The cinema will indeed be hosting 3D films, in particular Master Image 3D, which uses a unique combination of display techniques to deliver the best image detail and colour fidelity – the sharpest 3D cinema presentation available.”

According to the council newspaper Waltham Forest News, almost 500 people applied for jobs at the cinema and all 35 posts went to local folk.

A VIP screening and party will be held on Nov 19 to mark the opening. No names yet of who might be attending or which film will mark the return of a cinema to the borough after what I believe is a two-decade absence. Further update: Stow Fim Lounge, while not a purpose-built cinema venue, has been in touch to say it’s been operating for the last two years.
